Case Western Reserve University Receives $20.5 Million from Alumnus Donald Goodman and His Wife Ruth Weber Goodman

Case Western Reserve University has received a $20.5 million gift from Donald Goodman, DDS (DEN '45) and Ruth Weber Goodman. The Donald J. and Ruth Weber Goodman Philanthropic Fund will reside at the University and the Cleveland Foundation. Dental Researcher Works to Stop Bacteria From Harming Fetus

The best way to keep bacteria from doing any damage is to stop them before they start down their pathological road to destruction.

Yiping Han, associate professor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, aims to understand how to block a common bacterium that’s harmless in a mother’s mouth but can turn deadly when it reaches an unborn child. She has received a five-year, $1.85 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at the National Institutes of Health to fund the effort.

The bacterium, Fusobacterium nucleatum, becomes destructive once it leaves the mouth and enters the blood stream. Read more...

Dental Students, Faculty, Help More than 1,400 Dental Patients During Mission of Mercy Weekend

When patients started lining up at 1 a.m. in the morning to seek dental care at a Mission of Mercy free clinic in Parkersburg, W.V., this past weekend, Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine students and faculty had an eye-opening experience about the dental needs of people living in the Ohio River Valley.

The campus volunteers joined other volunteer professionals from the dental community and local colleges to help with the 1,400 patients in this rural West Virginia region. Read more...
